Summer News
Dear Members,
That garlic scape pesto I made last week? It has made its way into everything at my house this week from salad dressing to a delicious batch of chickpeas. The bright green color paired with serious garlic flavor makes me very happy. We do eat with our eyes after all. I would like to get some in the freezer (and you should do that too). Bonus, we have some young, uncured garlic in the share today. You can give the veg team a big high five for their mad skills in the field, because garlic is not easy, and it looks so great. You can use the stalk, as far up as you can chop before it gets woody. It won't keep on your counter like cured garlic so keep it in the fridge. It will be limited. But, scallions are just as beautiful this week as they were last week and are unlimited, so we can make all your allium dreams come true. Finally, the fennel is outstanding right now. I shaved some for a refreshing salad this week, and I also added some to a coconut milk chicken curry. I couldn't get enough of it.
We had a hard loss in the dairy herd this week. Citrus, the pretty young cow who had her first calf at the end of May, got sick on Tuesday and went downhill very fast, and she didn't make it despite doing everything we could for her. It might have been a really severe pneumonia that just took off too fast to treat, or it might have been hardware disease, which happens when a cow inadvertently swallows a piece of metal and it lodges somewhere fatal. I am leaning towards the latter but either way it's one of those unfortunate things that we have to accept.
Strawberries are finished, so now we look forward to raspberries, plus a newcomer: blackberries! Can't wait to see the first ripe ones. I'll keep you updated. The cherry tomatoes are starting to brighten up now. They are almost as good as fruit when they are dead ripe and fresh off the vine.
Skim will be available on Saturday around midday. Please take a careful look for limits in dairy this week.
You might notice we have a little camera aimed at the meat freezers in the pavilion this week. We're trying to get some real data on how much meat is going out each week so we can make mid and long term production plans.
We have an order coming from Crown Point Bakery Friday. I have to be out of town, so Barbara kindly offered to handle not only the bakery pickup but the farm store checkout rush again. Arrival has been 5pm lately, but we never know. Thank you so much, Barbara, for haunting Yannig's doorstep every week, to get the goods into the breadmobile the moment they are out of the oven.
Welcome welcome to Tracey this week, coming onboard for the vegetable and grain membership. It's the best time of year to eat vegetables, isn't it?
U Pick!
Please follow signs to pick a handful of cherry tomatoes and tomatillos!
With gratitude,
Kristin
PS, If you are picking up over the weekend and notice we're out of or critically low on something, would you please send me a text at (518) 645-4658 so I can refresh it? Thank you!
